Privatisation gone mad

by bacardiancoke @ 2007-08-14 - 12:46:11

Taking my usual digest of banalities this morning I found that National Express have won the East Coast Rail franchise (well at least it wasn't Virgin!)

But this makes me wonder - why does the DfT keep awarding rail franchises to companies that don't run rail companies in the first place - Virgin fly planes and ruin pay tv companies, First run buses that are, in my area, poorly maintained..

What's next British Gas supplying my electricity???

ah.

They are transport companies, however, so they understand logistics and should be able to provide a transportation service, devise a timetable etc.

Is that really so wrong?

You wouldn't have thought so with Virgin being awarded the Cross Country franchise, First getting the NW Franchise, Stagecoach getting a southern francise and GNER getting the East Coast.

They have all demonstrated in the mean time that they cannot run the system efectively enough and had their franchises taken away.

But, as you say, they are all transport companies.
